White 8900

Anyone know anything about these combines (8900 White with Perkins diesel and hydro)? There's one on CL that looks pretty nice. It would just be a backup machine for when the JD 9500 is down. Maybe once a year. He wants $3500 for it with corn head. Seems high but t used equipment is bringing high prices around here.

We had an earlier version, main difference was the cab and ours had a gas motor. The 8900 has a 52-in. cylinder and body so it's capacity is similar to the 750/850 Massey or 7700 John Deere. Aside from the gas motor in ours which gave some trouble, the rest of the machine did a good job and was reliable. With the Perkins in the 8900 it should be a good combine if it's been looked after. They're simple to set and run. It's been a long time since White made them and I don't know how parts support from Agco would be. I expect aftermarket parts wouldn't be as plentiful as for JD or IH combines. The 8900's lineage goes back to the 5555 and 7800 Olivers and 8800 White - lots of salvage parts from these models should interchange with the 8900. There was an 8920 model after the 8900 which was very similar.

Quite a few of these combines still running around here. (Edmonton AB). Parts are likely available from places like Combine World in western Canada.

If you want to get good back up combine from the 80s just get a IH 14 or 16 series. At least with those you can get parts. And their reputation is proven unlike other examples you keep finding.

I would stick with a Deere what way you can use the same heads. A 7720 or 8820 would be a fine backup machine. My 7720 may get 10 hours a year but at least crop was getting harvested while the 9500 was down.

I have a bish header adapter to put deere heads on a white or late model oliver combine. I can email pics if need be. Should not be hard to copy
