massey ferguson filler plates

so did more checking to try to figure out why my new to me 850 is beating up corn so bad. makes some of it into powder. read some past posts about filler plates. I have no filler plates in mine and wondering if I should add some. corn is around 16% concaves way open, almost 2" in the back and 1 1/2 in front. wondering if cobs are just bouncing inside the cylinder and that is why i'm having trouble. my old 510 has filler plates. I remember this from all the times of backing the cylinder up by hand when I plugged it up in beans. did nice on corn though.

got to wondering something. the plates on the beater in front of the cylinder are to be serrated. mine are pretty smooth. would that cause an issue? going to try to readjust concave this afternoon.

Slow the cylinder down some more and close the concave. Ears are tumbling over each other and grinding together. Closing the concave down makes them flow better. Concave should be closer in the rear than the front such as 1 1/4 front and 1" rear. Cylinder speed 450. Just my humble opinion.

Don't mean to be a jerk or offend you but you don't happen to have a 855 spike tooth rice combine do you? You've got me stumped other wise, unless your feeder house chain is grinding it up but I doubt it.

I have filler plates in the concave on my 750 but that is for doing clover. Without the filler plates the heads would just go right through the concave and be sent out the back of the combine without threshing. The plates keep the heads in the concave longer so the cylinder bars can tear them apart. Corn shouldn't need those filler plates.

no don't have the spiked tooth. talked to an old mf mech and he said try the filler plates. I've had the concaves open to the point where some corn was still on cob and small cobs were going right through.. it's baffeling me as well.

never had any dealings with and 850 but agco parts book shows a different bar assembly used on the rear beater for corn listed on page 58, also another long shot MF had filler wires for the concave if installed could be causing over threshing problems
