Combining corn with john deere 55

I shelled a few acres of my cousins corn today with the old 55 and a 244 head. This the first time that I have shelled corn with this combine. It was working pretty well except for two things. One is my cousin was not real careful when he planted this corn. he is used to having a guy shell it with a 4 row head. This combine will drive on the next row where he planted too close. This combine has 18.4 26 tires which don't help. I have some 14.9 26 tires we might try and see if that helps.

One other thing is this machine will kick out almost whole ears out the back when turning on the ends when the combine is not loaded. It doesn't do it at all when the combine is kept under load. I did not put the filler plates in and was wondering if this is why it would do that. I tried tightening up the concaves but then it broke up the cobs.

40 years ago I ran a 55 and would leave corn ears on the ends while exiting. Was baffled by this for quite sometime till I had someone watch but finally discovered the rubber flap under feeder house that kind of slides in under cylinder was outside instead of inside or on top of feed plate. Was fine through the field because head was lowered thus closing the gap but when raising head on the end it would open the flap and dump ears. Newer models may have had a steel plate instead of a rubber flap.

I bet you just answered his question. There is a special bracket and a rod that holds the flap in front of the stone trap and keeps the ears up in the cylinder. When the head is raised some ears are falling into the crack and going out his grain conveyor chain. I have been running both a 95 and a 105 without filler plates for years and never find and whole ears that go thru the machine. Tom

Did you find cylinder extentions so that your head will raise up? I just finish shelling yesterday with my 95 diesel and 444 corn head. Tom

You guys may be on to something. I had the feeder house off and we also had the stone trap and concaves out to replace it with the one from my parts combine. The stone trap has two brackets sticking out in the front that have holes in them there doesn't seem to be any place for them to bolt to. I bet there is supposed to be a rod through these holes that spans the whole width of the cylinder. Neither this combine or the parts combine had the rod but maybe that is what is letting the ears get through whole.

There is a flap that attaches to the feederhouse and you put that against the stone trap then insert a rod to hold it in place. That way the flap can pivot up and down when you raise and lower the head. Mine was replaced with a heavy piece of rubber (Mudflap off a truck?). Find an operators manual for an intermediate feederhouse and it will show pics and you also will see the cylinder extensions. You could make your own. Tom

Is there any way you could post a picture from the operating manual for the intermediate feederhouse? I am going to look for a manual but I would really like to shell some more corn tomorrow if possible. I cant seem to find anything on the jdparts website that shows what this flap and rod should look like.

With the feederhouse raised up and the front door open you can insert the rod. This is the first year using a quick tach feederhouse on my 95. I did not have the brackets so I drilled a hole in each side of the combine and slid a rod the whole way thru and put a cotter pin in each end. The flap needs to be long enough that when the head is completly down it does not pull out but not to long that it would get caught by the grain conveyor chain when completely up.I believe that factory the piece behind the rod may have been metal with a lip on it that kept it from pulling up past the rod and then a smaller piece of rubber for a hinge that attached to the feederhouse. My 105 only has a homemade piece of rubber on it. My 95 is in the back of the shed with the head down and the batteries removed or I would try and get you some pics or measurements. Tom

The parts book is pc 1195 and is called John Deere Combine Feeder Houses for Quick-Tatch corn heads and platforms. I can not get it to show online but what you need is listed on page 10. Tom

I went back to JD parts and typed in 1195 (left the pc off) on the catalog page and it came up. The picture on page 10 shows the parts including the rod and the brackets. Hope this helps. Tom

I opened up my bottom door and this is how it looked. I have the metal plate that is attached by a rubber hinge. I also have the brackets that are bolted to the front of the stone trap. I just don't have the rod to hold it up. There is definitely room for an ear to drop through the gap when the head is up. I think you guys solved my problem. Thanks guys for the help.
