JD 4420 Primary Contershaft

I am preparing to replace the primary countershaft and many of the related parts that are on this shaft. I have the right side taken apart so that only the bearing and it's holder remain. I have not taken apart the left side yet. I have ordered a new shaft and bearings, as well as new seals and bushings for the electromagnetic clutch pulley, and new bearings, bushings, and seals for the large variable speed pulley on the right side.

This is my first time repairing this part of this combine, and I would appreciate any tips for making it go easier. Any important things to look for or to adjust would be great to hear as well!

Thank you for any help!

Make sure you get the dimensions correct on the left side. Where the bearing is on the shaft effects the end play in the electric clutch. If this is too wide the clutch will not engage all of the time.

The rest of it is just hard work in a tight place.

Pretty easy job actually the variable speed puilley is kind of heavy but I have taken mine off and put it on buy myself in one piece several times . If you don?t have a service manual get one I got one for my 7700 on eBay I?m a John Deere binder for 150$ money well spent If you plan on doing jobs like this yourself

It appears to be slightly bent on the end of the right hand side. The keyway on the right side is also worn, and the surface of the shaft is worn where the variable speed pulley sits. I have heard of neighbors replacing just the bearings and having the shaft fail not long after.

Thank you for your help! I was not aware the clutch clearance had to be set by the position of the bearings on the shaft. I'll pay close attention to that as I disassemble. I have ordered a technical manual for it as well, so I hope to have a repair that lasts.
