6620 Clean Grain Elevator Chain

I smoked the belt that runs my clean grain elevator chain and "bubble up" auger. It was stuck and burned it up at the bottom drive pully. I replaced the belt and turned the chain with a pipe wrench manually thinking something was lodged or a paddle came loose or? After inspecting each paddle as it came around and found nothing I then engaged it at low RPM and broke the top sprocket on the clean grain chain. I replaced the bearings, sprocket, and clean grain chain. I turned it by hand again making sure everything operated smoothly. I harvested 30 acres of corn and had the same issue. Before I started I checked the chain to make sure it hadn't stretched and needed tightening. Belt smoked, replaced the belt, operated manually with a pipe wrench, ran it at low rpm and broke the top sprocket. Both times I broke the belt is was after I had stopped for a minute and then re engaged the seperator. It has to be something binding somewhere?
JD Seller - I know you have the answer. I have it all repaired again but am nervous to go to the field. It is a real pain in the butt to make this repair. Anybody have any recommendations?

Wild guess? Bearing with a bad cage lets the balls go to one side. It turns freely when turned slowly but at normal speed the bearing balls get jammed up and lock the shaft. Once the belt or sprocket break, the balls release and it can be turned easily. Just a guess.

Been a few years but is the loading auger gearbox locked up? I changed a lot of them out, most people never grease and if they do its the wrong grease.

Should check the loading auger gear box. Might be a bearing bad and the 2 gears inside are locking up. That gear box should be pumped full of John Deere corn head grease once a year.

Check the gearbox if there's any wobble in the pulley that's likely the trouble. Take a good look at your auger flighting while you are at it. Don't be afraid to replace it if it's wore down. A worn auger makes the gearbox work harder and if the gearbox bearings are bad the gears might be coming out of mesh not getting the corn away from the elevator overloading it. Use cornhead grease in the gearbox when you assemble and don't be shy about greasing it.

Is it breaking when empty or when your harvesting???? If it is when our empty then the trouble just about has to be in the gear box or one of the bearing in the clean grain system.

If it is breaking when your harvesting then check and see if the loading auger has sheared the key/bolt where it is attached to the gear box. I have had them do this. The auger will run empty but not when full. It will slip on the shaft and soon will plug the top of the clean grain elevator. Then you plug the elevator and smoke the belt. This issue will also mislead the low shaft speed monitor system too. As the elevator is turning but the auger itself is not up to speed.

Also high yielding corn and worn auger flighting can cause the loading auger to plug too.
