JD 216 wobble box drive spring

When I started working on the wobble box I noticed this spring was broke so thought I would replace it while the drive was off. My problem is the manual says it should be compressed to a length of 2 3/4 inches, was putting it on today and there is no way that I can see it is ever going to be that short - maybe more like 3 3/4". Anyone ever run into this or have one they could measure for me. 216 flex head.

I found part of my problem. PO put newer style bracket on head so when I ordered parts that is what I ordered for but the manual is the original - for the older setup. I could still use the parts I have I think if I could find the spring length for a newer head. If I remember right the break starts with serial numbers that begin with a 6.
