running corn head on john deere 55

I just put the corn head on the 55 today for the first time since I have owned it. It probably hasn't been on there for 15 years or so. It seems to run well after we lubed it up a little.

This combine has the springs under the feeder house to help with using the rigid grain head. These springs compress all the way with the corn head and it doesn't lift up very high. My book doesn't say anything about the springs but I am wondering if a guy should disable the springs somehow when using the corn head so it would lift higher.

Jim, If you are interested in the corn heads I have ,will try to figure out a way to get some pics. I don't have a phone with a camera.

This is all really for my son. He only has 3 acres now and we only have a 4 row planter now. We have a line on some more acres but around here most are already taken. If he gets more acres, I'd like to see him get a 6 row no till planter and then we would need a 3 row corn head. Right now unless the head was cheap i doubt he wants to spend his money on a 3 row head. He is just 21 and although I feel he is doing better than most kids his age, he is still a kid at heart. He bought a duramax truck so that's taking a lot of his money. I'm not sure what he is going to do with the money from his beans.

If I remember right you have the late style feederhouse that uses the quick attach heads? If you do you need to move your hyd cylinder to the back set of holes for the corn head to lift high enough. I just put the late style feederhouse on my 95 last week and the book says to use back set of holes for corn head to get enough lift. Use front holes for grain platform. Tom

If your fields are not too irregular in shape, you need not match the planter to the header. Set the markers properly and drive accordingly. Lots of fields planted with a four row planter and combined with a 3 row head. Ben

I will look tomorrow to see if I have the extra holes. I do have the intermediate feeder house. I don't have the cyl. extensions but I believe the springs and the spring frame takes up this extra space. I have the manual for the original combine but I don't have a manual for the newer feeder house or the float spring attachment.

Ben, that is the way I did it with a 4 row planter and 3 row head, 494A planter and 313 head on 45 machine. And mine had those float springs on when I got it and junked them before first season was over. I could control the grain head better by sight and hand than those springs would do.
