JD 42 Combine

Looking at a JD 42 Pull Type Combine - its far away - would need to load on a trailer to bring it home; Anyone have any pics or information having done it before - I'm not too familiar with the 42, from looking at pictures - it looks like you can raise the head and slide the tongue over pretty far. From the manual, it is either 9' 8" or 8'8" tall, length 25' (not including tongue)width 9'1" (of the head) but it is offset some - so I'm guessing it between 10-11 total width.
If anyone has some information - much appreciated- trying to determine if feasible to go pickup;
other alternative is to try one of those shippers online - never done that - but I'm guessing just give them whatever information I have on it - then they deal with it - any advise on that would be welcomed as well.

The only one I ever hauled was delivered to us on a semi with the head removed. The base machine will go on a trailer nicely but the platform will have to be removed if hauling very far. Tom

I have purchased four 42s and have towed them all with my pickup. One I pulled several hundred miles. Just add some magnetic tail lights.

How far is far? In the 60s Dad bought a 42 that was a full state away and pulled it home behind a 1/2 ton Chevy pick up. When the tongue is swung over for travel they are not that wide and travel easily down the road. Guess it also depends where you are, the roads and berms are much wider west of Ohio than east.

We have a model 42 that we restored several years ago and it has traveled more than a lot of people the past few years. When it is in transport position the tongue is well under the header and will fit on a 24 foot trailer and they are not very heavy so they travel well. One thing to remember is to take along a couple of 2x10 planks to put under the right tire wile loading. Most trailers are quite steep whether it is a beaver tail or a tilt bed the clean grain elevator will bottom out before the tire reaches the incline or ramp. It will be over width but not by very much, perhaps one foot or say six inches on each side. I have hauled ours several thousand miles on a fifty three foot drop deck and nobody has ever said a thing. I was only stopped one time in Iowa coming back from the "Expo" and I still think the officer just wanted to get a better look at the combine. He walked up along the trailer and hit all the tie down straps with his fist to check that they were tight and when he got to the tractor he asked where I was going and I said back home to Michigan and he said have a nice trip and that was that. I will try to post some pictures.
