Gleaner 238 corn head question

I picked the first patch of corn yesterday, it turned off better than expected. I have a KL238 orange corn head on my Gleaner K, I noticed the head was wanting to break off some of the stalks instead of pulling them down through the stripper rolls and/or plates. It did this at the end of last year but the corn was really dry, yesterday I was picking corn at the 20-22% range. I'm getting a very clean sample in the bin but i'm sure the extra fodder going through the machine just makes it work harder. I watched a few youtube videos and the heads shown was not putting hardly any stalks in the machine. What do I need to adjust on mine? I do have a manual for the head but I don't know if its a snapping roll or plate adjustment. Thanks for all the help you guys have given me!

I would say your stripper plates are too close. You want them larger than your stalks but smaller than the diameter of the cob.

Lots of possibilities. Could be a corn variety characteristic. Ground speed is a factor. Can you tell if the rolls are not getting a hold of the stalk, and forward movement is what's trying to rip the ears off? My cousin used to have a KL238 on an E, and he drove so fast, that you could see the stalks were bent over. In other words, his ground speed was too fast for his header. Maybe the header was running too slow. Or are your rolls chewing the stalks right off?

I wouldn't worry about fodder running through the machine, as long as the grain in the bin is clean.

As JD said.....when adjusting the stripper plates, make sure they are set wider at the rear end of the stalk way, or else ears will jam there. Ben
