6620, trying to improve straw spread pattern

Had the opportunity to custom harvest rye this summer for a couple of neighbours,and i noticed i was not doing a good job spreading the straw evenly. The outside deflectors on the chopper were getting the brunt of the straw and sending it into a straight line well to the ouside of the spread pattern.On the following pass the two lines merge to create a mini windrow. So now i was spreading the straw but creating windrows all across the field. I tried adjusting the deflectors but didnt change anything. Wondering how it would work with the ouside delectors were totally removed.Anybody figure out how to get the straw spread nice and even on these combines

The flighting on the head is supposed to match throat on combine. Could be your head flighting was trimmed back for bigger combine. This would tend to load sides of feederhouse and carry on through to walkers etc.

Actually Cornerpost may have a reason but it opposite for what he is describing. Check the flighting on your cross auger. If your header was setup for a wider combine then they may have trimmed the flighting off at a wider demission that your JD 6620 feeder house width. This will result in the sides of the combine being loaded more than the center. The flighting should extend past the side of the feeder house 4 inches or so.

You can measure this and replace the flighting if it is cut too wide. To verify what is going on you should do a power shut down while combining. Then look at the material on the straw walkers. If the outside walkers have more material then you need to narrow up the flighting.

IF the material is spread out well then your trouble is in the chopper itself. You need the hammers to be good and square. The sickle sections that are on the door all need to be there and be sharp. IF your JD 6620 is an early one with the short deflector and smaller vanes then you should look into updating to the later chopper. The longer swath door and vanes just work better.

So to answer your question you can make that machine lay out an even spread. Things just have to be setup correctly.

Thx for the reply JD Seller, im wondering if the sickle sections can be sharpened right where its mounted if one can get a small grinderin there or its best to replace them?

All you have to do is take the bolts out that holds the knife holder in or out. Then you can rotate the holder open further and you can work it out form under the hinge pin. Then just take a grinder and sharpen them.

I would really check the cross auger flighting. What your describing is exactly what happens if the flighting is cut too wide for the feeder house opening.
