Tell me about using a spike cylinder in wheat

I'm using a F2 Gleaner on peas. I've taken the rasp cylinder out and replaced with a spike to run the vines thru better. But, if I grow wheat, I may be forced to use this machine to harvest it. So, I was just trying to gather general information about doing it. Also, was given a rock door and the back plate under the cylinder that have heavy springed fingers. What are they for?

I think you use those in conjuction with the spike cylinder for delicate crops that
are easily split like edible beans. To harvest wheat, use the rasp bar cylinder and
get the standard door and concave on which you can bolt the channel bars. That combo
will do a great job in wheat with good capacity. Ben

Threshing machines used spike tooth cylinders. They will work just fine in wheat, rice, etc... even soy. I think you are just fine with the equipment you have.

Thanks for your response, but I'm not about to put that rasp cylinder back in. It took two days to get it out and the spike put in. Thus the reason I want to hear about using the spike for wheat.

Spike tooth will be just fine in wheat. I have an M2 w/spike tooth cylinder, and it's a bean-eatin' machine and does a fine job with wheat.
If you're wanting to bale straw behind it, don't run the cylinder faster than necessary for good threshing. Did that this year and it chopped
my straw a little too much. Bales didn't want to hold their shape when handling them. As for the rock door, Glener had the best rock trap of
any machine - bar none. The spring tension keeps the door closed until/unless your eat a rock, then the springs will compress and open the
door, allowing the rock to fall out the bottom. The springs have to be adjusted right, methinks, but am a little fuzzy on how - been a long
time since I've had to adjust them.

Spike tooth cylinder works in conjunction with spike tooth concaves. I assume you removed the rasp bar concave when you removed the rasp bar
cylinder. Don't know about Gleaner but on older Case machines you needed 4 rows of spike teeth to thresh some hard threshing crops.

Haven't looked lately, but I think there are two rows of spikes on the rock door (which is not in) and two rows behind that. Peas are easy to get out, with just the two behind.
