Question about john deere 55 combine

My son and I are putting the finishing touches on getting the 55 ready to cut his beans. We had some unusually hot weather last week and it really made the beans around here dry down. Quite a few guys around are cutting the beans. My sons are getting close but I think they need a few more days.

We removed the chaffer because we could see quite a bit of coon dung on top of the sieve and we wanted to clean it. Once we got the chaffer out and the sieve clean we found that the sieve had a few rows of the fingers that were rusted away from the coon dung. So we took the sieve out to replace it with the one from our parts combine. When we had the sieve out, we noticed that there is a canvas or rubber piece that is bolted to both the fan and the shoe. It has a loop in it to allow the shoe to move back and forth.

My question is this canvas is chewed by rats or something on each side about 2" in. I don't think it will leak grain here but it may leak air from the fan. Will it work ok with these chewed holes or do we have to fix it?

It will leak some grain. Being you are that far in, now is the time to do it. I made a new one for our 105 with the existing steel and some bulk
denim from a craft store. Good luck!
