Swather and Combind

Swathed my grain earlier this week with my old 655 MF swather. And today I started dragging my old MF 851 combind around to thresh it. These have been a reliable old pair for me . I only do 50-100 acres per year. And they do the deed. I don't know of anyone else around me that harvest with similar equipment to what I have. Most guys get a custom operator in to harvest for them now days. Some how , it just doesn't seem worth it , time you pay for the harvesting and the trucking , there's not much left. I can do it myself with this old equipment no one else really wants to be bothered with, and it doesn't break the bank.

I always liked swathing small grains. It really makes combining them easier. It just seems that we just can not justify raising small grains around here anymore. The income is just not even close to what corn or soybeans will do. With cash rents and land prices still high you just can not afford to raise oats/wheat/barley here.

I have several thoughts. It works and it's payed for. What's wrong with that? Hard to find a conventional combine anymore if you are saving straw. Not much would clean up small grain like a massey. I could run that 655 in my sleep!

Growing small grain for me is a good way to ensure a suplie of straw. Cost me very little to grow this crop. I only fertilizerd with manure, seed from my bin, and because of all the rain we couldn't spray this year before it headed out, so no spraying cost either. Very little small grain growers here anymore either, just for the reasons which you stated JD. It still works well for me because if I don't grow straw, I have to buy it, money either way. The straw can add $100.00 per acre to the overall value of the crop easily for me.

Probably the only time in all of history a Kubota tractor has ever been used to run a pull type combine.
