Overkill on combine

Neighbors up the road do organic farming.Every year they would get someone to get their crop out.Which would mean a complete cleaning out of the combine grain tank augers etc. They would do it them self when the cutter would drop the combine off the day before.Nobody minded doing for them they are some of best people you would ever meet.So this year they got a CIH 1660 to do 80 acres of crops. They even say it is overkill but anything smaller was way over priced for the condition the one is in.

Have a friend farms the family farm of 120 acres and has a 9410 JD he got tired of waiting on custom cutters or expecting him to kiss their behind to get something done.Just does his own put 25 hour a year on the machine. He said it will last him the rest of his farming career.

Combine values have dropped, so it maybe isn't so much overkill as one would think. If their organic technique is like a certain relative of mine's, they'll need a big combine- or at least one that can eat a
lot of weeds at times.

I am not organic but I have not sprayed to kill weeds other than spot spraying for Canada thistle since 1999, all depends on how things are taken care of and location I guess, my Dad always sprayed here I have proven it can be done here without it

We bought a reconditioned 1993 Gleaner R52 with 20' flex head to use on ~120 acres a year. Went from a Gleaner F2 to the R52. Speeds up harvesting and less downtime for repair. I'm 50 and the combine should last me till I retire from farming.

Have a 9500 Deere. Had covered 700 acres with it when dad was doing some custom harvesting and had a 190 acre tract of land we were tenants on. Probably had overkill on equipment for complete farming on just under 500 acres and the added 200 acres of custom harvesting. One landlord got greedy on cash rent on one tract, and the landlord on another tract wasn't real happy about a "political stance" my father took on a lousy local board. Now running about 250 acres through everything. Having overkill when I have a full time job and am a "weekend warrior" is a necessity, rather than a luxury. The weather doesn't always cooperate and having that added capacity has proven advantageous, too. All of it is paid for, with the exception of the last 2 years of payments on a 12 row planter. Nice not having a banker breathing down your neck, too.

With the exception of my grain dryer I probable have big enough equip. to run 2000 acres. I only run 400. It's all paid for so what's the difference?

I have a JD 4420 combine for doing 15 acres of wheat and 15 acres of oats every year. It was the smallest combine I could find with air-conditioning that would fit in my machine shed with a 13 ft. header. I have put 120 hours on it after 6 years of use. I too have been told that a 4420 is overkill to do 30 acres a year on my hobby farm. Al

Organic farming is like it was in the 50 and 60's if
you do it right... Im not a big farmer either but take
care of weeds it pays at the end. People try telling
your yields will suffer and this and that. It's simple
math. 8.75/bu picked up at farm for corn. I can grow
an average crop of corn and double my profit
margin vs conventional. So just remember you
might think it's "overkill" but for them it's a stepping
stone. They might be renting what your farming now
in a few yrs if conventional prices stay like they are..

How come you don't get certified for organic? You are almost there and from what I have seen the organic prices make it worth the effort.

I have seen pictures of some corn fields from the 50's and 60's many of them were far from weed free with lots of foxtail present. Quack grass was also a big problem. The organic farmers around here have a big mess every year. I'm not against the concept but I'm not going to let my farm look that way. They are not getting half of what the conventional farms are yielding.
