Changing cylinder speed on john deere 55

The 55s I have are chain drive on the cylinder. The sprocket on the cylinder shaft is not too hard to change but the one on the beater shaft is a real pain. The problem is going to corn from wheat you almost need to swap the 2 sprockets. Going from corn to beans you probably just change the one on the cylinder. Does anyone have any tricks for changing these sprockets that would be rather easy

It isn't as bad as it looks... Things like the slip clutch assembly in the way on the shaft come off in one piece, and the shaft is stepped and tapered so you are not fighting each object to the end of the shaft.

I tried to remove my pulleys from my beater shaft but without a puller, its not happening. Of course they have probably been on there for 30 years. Maybe once I get them off and shined up it wont be so bad.

My combine has a variable speed fan but I believe you have to turn the pulley which widens or narrows the pulley width. The fan runs off the same belt that drives something else. I believe its the straw walker crankshaft. Now the parts combine I bought has a variable speed fan which adjusts by turning a knob down by the pulley. This looks much easier to adjust the fan speed but ads another pulley to the beater shaft to be removed when changing the cylinder speed sprocket. Do you think it is worth putting this style fan on my combine or is it not really worth the trouble.

You did have all the set screws loose, right? I took one of those apart at a salvage yard one cold winter day, and had very little issue.
