removing feeder house on IH 1420..

Rotor wont turn, shop expert says bolts holding rotor to drive hub are broke, need to pull rotor. I have never pulled the feeder house off or a rotor. Can any one give me somewhat of a guide how to proceed. I'm a pretty good mechanic. If its too hard of job I can bring it local indendant shop. Want to avoid the $110/CaseIh hourly rate of possible. I am getting ready to do the same job on a 1440. I haven't done it before either. I guess I will start removing bolts and see what happens. I loaned mine to a neighbor to finish his beans because his burned, It came back plugged with weeds and the rotor hub bolts sheared.

Just curious, did he bring your machine back and tell you there was something wrong with it, or just drop it off and leave? I lent a gravity box to a horse-person friend, who returned it in the dead of night. Didn't find out until later that the frame was bent, tie rods bent, rear cross member of the box caved in, and the box itself was scratched and dented. They had been battering it with a skid-steer trying to make it dump sawdust.

Hi Dave Did mine years ago rotor was out of balance on account of an encounter with a stump by a previous owner. Take it slow check things as you go like wiring is disconnected. Had a mechanic and I was the apprentice. We removed the feeder housing as a unit used a loader with chains after disconnecting it. Two people are a help you don't want to damage the cab. Suggest you slide timbers into bottom of concave so the rotor will slide out. We did the rubber between the drive and rotor while apart and the seals in the rotor drive box. New bearings and used a set of fence wire strainers and light chain to get the rotor to slide back up into the concave. Supporting careful levering and pushing gets things back together. Definitely a two man job, parts diagrams are a must. Hope that is some help. Matt

Are you sure you need to pull the feeder house/ rotor if the hub bolts are broken??? I've never been around a 1420, but I've changed the two speed rotor gearbox on a 1680 and the hub is right behind it. I'd be looking at the other end of the rotor before I pulled it out the front. I'd also confirm its not a problem with that gearbox.

Done one on a 1460 and a 1660 I cut strips of osb plywood about 6 inch's side to slide the rotor back in on and as long as you don't have a chopper just turn it on it will chew them right up.makes it easier
