Massey 410 diesel?

looking around for a backup combine to my Gleaner F2 for soybeans.. Came across a massey 410 diesel with 15 foot flex, asking $3000 or I came
across a massey 300 diesel with 10 foot flex. Both look in good shape, I ran a 300 last year in my wheat but sold it cause I needed a flex
head and prefer a diesel engine. how big is the bin on the 410?

They where not a bad combine BUTTTTT a MF combine of that age is a bear to work on. Some of the bearings on the cross drives take a lot of time to replace. Also AGCO are not cheap either. Not many parts machines left around here as the junk yards hauled them to scrap when prices where high. I do not know of a single MF combine of that series or age running in my area. Not many MF 750/760 still going either.

The $3K seems high for the market BUT condition makes a huge difference too. I saw a MF 860 gray cab with 20 foot flex head and 6x30 corn head sell two weeks ago. Sold for $2500. Nice running machine too.

, when scrap was sky hi , i stopt at 2500 for a nice 750 with a fine mudhog my brother used to own ,.NO HEADS ,.they were going for $2000 each..nutz!!..the winner was a "friend" scrapper i knew , he told me he could sell the mud hog for 12-18 hundred easily,, But, He said that 750 was too nice to scrap ,.He offered me a deal ,since He had been to my place a couple yrs ago , He asked if i would trade my parts 300s that were outside and a few old cars and trucks that were going to ruin for,, the 750 combine ,.. and , So We Did ...I speak Massey fairly well . Honestly ,they ain't no worse than anything else going when it comes to repairs and wrenching ,.THEY are all a Royal PIA ! Lol ,.. Funny , about gleaners , and i know there are alot of guys that can make a Gleaner 'Walk on Water " and do a fine job ,.. but Golly there is alot of fine Tuning and education to learn ,and all those belts and pulleys and grease zerks ecerywhere ,.Sheesh ,.after 3 yrs with the F ,.i was ready to go back to Massey..

Massey never made a combine that was easy to work on going all the way back to the 90. I think they get the credit for engineering the first 3 belts on one shaft design. Deeres were at least easy to work up until the 00 series.

well the 410 is sold.. I found a Massey 540 for $2900 with 13 foot flex. Looks in nice condition.

Good bad and ugly on a 540?

Is there a reason you don't want another Gleaner or another F1, F2 or F3?

It can be handy if your backup machine is the same or nearly the same as your main combine. The backup machine can use the same heads as the first combine, so you don't necessarily need to buy a complete set of heads for the second machine, or to find shed space for a second set of heads. If the second combine does come with some heads, the extra heads can be used on either combine or as parts donors. When harvest seasons overlap, one machine can be left setup for beans and the other setup for corn, possibly eliminating the need to change heads and readjust the combine twice a day. Either combine can also be a parts donor for the other. Your stock of spare parts, filters, fluids, cycle bars, cycle guards, belts, bearings, etc. will work on either machine, so you don't have to buy nearly as many spare parts to support a second machine. Adjustments are the same, so you and your help don't need to learn a second machine. It's usually easier to keep one machine running if you have two nearly identical combines.

I'm not saying one brand or one model is any better or any worse than another, just that running two nearly identical combines can save some time and some money.

work ir and treat it likeit is a 300.. Always heard a 540 was a glorified 300 , the cylindar mite be 2 inches wider than a 300 . never ran one,. seems the 540 was misleading to make operators think they were getting at best a 410 in 510 work clothes ,. .. they just never had a l arge capacity like a 510.. and again 3 belts on a pulley is the norm
