Gleaner k ignition timing

I read a post on the Allis Chalmers forum where someone said that the factory setting of TDC caused them to run lean and high exhaust temperatures caused the exhaust manifold to crack and fail. They said to set it for 6 degrees BTDC instead. I checked the specs for cars with the GM 250 engine and they call for 6 BTDC. Can anyone give more information on this?

It depends on whether you're setting the timing at an idle, or at operating speed. Timing at idle would be somewhere around 0, and at operating speed somewhere around 25. On any spark ignition engine, timing advance operation should be verified. And on an engine like this with a governed working speed, I prefer to set timing there. Whereas on a non-governed automotive engine, you can check advance by revving the engine, but timing spec's are typically given for idle speed.

As long as you don't advance the ignition timing far enough for a given batch of fuel along with seasonal operating temperatures to cause destructive "spark knock" that you will be able to hear, the earlier the better for power, fuel economy, and cool running.
