55EB john deere combines

I found 2 john deere 55EB combines with 2 grain heads and 1 244 2 row corn head. He wants 1500 for both combines and the 3 heads. He claims they both were used 5 years ago. Would they be worth that. I have not seen them in person but it appears they have been setting outside. Would they be worth the money?

The 244 head does requuire that quick adapter unit. It was made for the 3300 and 4400 machines. Setting out check the bottom of the hopper for rust out under the unloading auger. Had that on my 45's.

We also found a 45 combine that pretty rough but it does have a corn head. I know it doesn't have the quick attach feeder housing. Would this 45 head fit one of these 55s if it doesn't have a quick feeder housing.

Are you sure it's not a 234 corn head? The 234 is the old style with the feederhouse attached to the head.

Both for 1500 I would jump on that. Where are you located? I'm looking for a k2 myself but if that deal was close enough to me you would have to beat me to it!

A few years ago they were worth more than that for scrap. The 244 corn heads are worth $500 or more just for the row units. I would pick the best one to use and keep the other one for parts. If you ever want narrow rows you would have the correct feederhouse to use a 343 corn head. I would prefer the 55 over a 45 as it has more capacity. Check the engine oil for any signs of antifreeze as water in the oil was a very common problem on the 303 engines used in 55 and 95 combines. I parted out my 55 because of that problem as it was high hour machine and not worth overhauling. I currently have two 95's and 105 diesel. Tom

Well my son and I bought one of these 55 eb combines for 750.00 it does have the 244 corn head and the intermediate feeder housing but we are not sure it runs. The owner did say it ran the last time he used it but that was a while ago. It was in a building. The engine does roll over but it has the distributor cap and plug wires missing. I guess he robbed these for something else. The other combine had a small fire around the battery. The 244 corn head is a little rusty on the outside skins but it does look like it would work. It has 2 extra snouts with it. The grain head looks like it needs a little work on the cross auger. a few of the fingers that pop out are missing. We had to take the tires off to get this low enough on the trailer. The 3 hour trip home was a pretty good work out for the chevy

Wow you like work. I would have loaded it on the trailer then let the air out of the tires rather than removing them. You would have been low enough to haul. We hauled my 105 that way with 23.1x26 tires. It was slightly overheight but not enough to make it a big issue. Hauled from central MN to the southwest WI. Looks like a good project and the price was right with the 244 head worth $500 just for parts.I have a complete distributer and a few other extra engine parts off a gas that we parted out. First thing I would do is drain the engine oil and check for any antifreeze in it as that was a big problem with the 303 engines. If it does have that problem I would consider putting a 329 diesel engine out of a 4400 or an early 6600 in it. We changed our 95 to a diesel. Paid about $750 for a good used engine. Tom

Not fun at all. There is an inspection cover in the auger. You need to reach inside and the bottom of the finger is hex shaped for a wrench. If it is broke inside you may need to cut it off and then use a socket. The machine will still feed with one or so missing but it is a good idea to replace them. Do you have the newer style grain head or will you need to change to the older style feederhouse and grain head? I still use the old style for grain on the 105 and then change the feederhouse to the late style for corn. Tom
