gleaner hugger head

My son and I are considering buying a gleaner F combine and the owner says it has a hugger corn head that can be adjusted for different row widths. I am not familiar with hugger heads. Why do they call them hugger heads?

IIRC it"s a more low profile head, closer to the ground. Newer than the black A series head..

Thanks for the reply. I assumed it was probably a lower profile head but really didn't know. So it would be a plus to have this type head?

A hugger head refers to the newer style head with enclosed gear boxes for each row. The black frame heads had no gearboxes and used bevel gears for the drives. Both heads were adjustable 2 inches wider or narrower. The hugger style head is newer than an F series and would have to be modified to fit. They were of the same era as the early R series. Ben

They may have confused the black head with the hugger version...... I've seen folks get things not quite right on ads before.....

A hugger head will have an enclosed chain drive on the left side....looks like a basting pan on its edge. If there is no pan it probably is an A series black frame. A hugger head would be preferable. Ben
