Deere snapping rolls

Wondering which I should order and why? Need new rolls for our 643 head and see I can get either straight or tapered rolls, it has tapered on it now but the stalks all deadhead on the top before getting pulled through so time for new ones. Looked for answers on google but they think I should go get a new chopping head from JD...

We usually ran the tapered rolls when we stayed with the OEM style rolls. In later years of the 40 series headers we usually used an after market style of roll. I really liked the Pixal rolls.

On mine years ago I put down hard surfacing rod on the flutes of the rolls and made them basically straight in the process. Some minor grinding was needed to clear the trash knives. When the rolls are turned (by hand) there is no gap you can see between the flutes. All of the flutes are somewhat taller than when new. I've used the head this way for many years and it does a nice job of taking stalks through while chewing up the stalks at the same time. If your stalks look like a corn picker has been through the field instead of a corn head it's time to repair or replace. Mike

Mike, I've got a stupid question, when you built up the flutes did you take the rolls apart? And if you did how big a job or difficult is it?

The rolls were welded where they were. I tried to keep the area around the bearing and seal cool as I welded. This was done several years ago and never gave any trouble and works well. Mike

Thanks Mike. I might try the mig welder on them which should help with the heat a bit. I don't do a whole lot of acres, usually only between 30-40 a year so maybe the mig weld will last a couple years for me.
