1420 combine diesel fuel leak--how to troubleshoot?

I am getting diesel fuel leaking from the injection pump area, on my 1420 combine.

It starts dripping as soon as the ignition key is turned and the fuel pump starts. A slow steady drip. It will continue for a while after the key is turned off.

Otherwise the engine runs fine.

I've checked as best I can looking at the pump, and the leak doesn't seem to be coming from any of the cylinder fuel lines, where they attach to the pump. Seems to be coming more from the forward (towards the engine) area.

There's an engine brace in the way, that I may have to try to remove to get a better look.

Just wondering for some advice, basic troubleshooting steps to find out where this is coming from. And how to fix. Thanks for any advice!

Best way to find leaks is to keep blowing the area dry, I use a blow gun with a length of 3/16 inch brake line on the end about a foot long. If I recall you have the Bosch VE rotary injection pump, most I see in for repair have head seal or advance area leaks. Throttle shaft leaks are common too.

Thanks for the reply . I am assuming I will probably have to remove the pump. I've got the manual, but was wondering if this is a job for the typical person to tackle on his own. I noticed in the manual it requires a puller to remove the drive gear. But other sources says the pump can be removed "by a few taps on the shaft".

Is this something I can do (remove the pump)? Or should it be left to an expert?

Hi Zooeyhall had to remove the pump on mine and get it sealed up a few years ago. Made a puller out of some light flat steel. From memory got a compass measured distance of shaft centre to bolt holes. Drill centre hole then put in three on the radius around it. Attach to gear and used a bolt to ease it out. I am no machinist but it worked well. Resealed pump means no leaks and less risk of fire. Hope I got that right I am getting older! Matt

Dieseltech rebuilt my rotary injection pump on my 886. It was running just fine but was leaking fuel from the top cap area. He is VERY reasonable, very quick turn around (one week from mail out to returned mail), and very well recommended by folks here on the YT boards. He gives you all of the instructions you need to have the engine timed perfectly. Mine literally fired up like I had just used it the day before. All of my pump issues will go straight to him.
