Old combines not worth much

At auction today, JD 7720 turbo with 24' rigid header, started right up, engaged machine and it sounded good. $3250. Then they sold two 6 row heads, one 653 and one 653A for $200 each. They both looked pretty good and straight. Some other stuff I noted: IHC H tractor, started right up and idled like a champ, good tires: $450 1961 JD 4010 diesel, original, straight sheet metal, good tires, wide front, looked like original paint, 3PT: $3200 JD 4430 good tires, decent paint and sheet metal: $8000 1974 JD 4640, good tires, duals, sounded good; $12,500 EZ-trail 500 grain cart, looked nice, $2600

That's valuable information. I was on the verge of paying $2400 for an always - shedded 653A. Had no reason to believe it was overpriced. Going to re-think this purchase.

(quoted from post at 03:25:28 05/07/17) In Ohio, market is double on everything you listed.

Your yields and land values are much higher than we are too. Remember everything is relative.

7720 and 8820 combines don't have much value anymore because mother deere has stopped making parts for them and much of the high wear parts are not available in aftermarket. Mike tells me he has a waiting list for many 8820 parts.

When you stop to think of it, combines are a lot of "hollow" sheet metal without a lot of heavy iron for scrap. If you don't have a way to crush them, combines are hard to disassemble for salvage, which is why the low prices.

I have to disagree, 20 series combines are still well supported by the aftermarket and mother Deere in wear parts. Elevators, augers, walkers, sieves, shafts ect are all still available. Only parts that are harder to come by new are parts that don't commonly break. But salvage yards are full of combines for those parts.
