Made a good find yesterday

While in Iowa yesterday I found a couple of combines that have some parts on that I have been looking for. Started out that I was not paying attention and missed my road. Wife looks at map and tells me not to worry just go west then head south on next blacktop road. While driving I saw a farmstead that had 5-6 105 Deere combines as well as 2-3 95's and a 55. I went back and talked to the owner and he agreed to sell me some parts latter this spring. I need a straw spreader for my 95 and the correct throttle linkage and air cleaner pipe for my 105 diesel. He also has two 105 diesels that he would sell sell the engines off of. Anyone have any idea what to offer for two 404 engines that were running when parked but have been setting for 20+ years? I always said look at the things I see when lost that I would never see otherwise.LOL Tom

I wish I could run across things list that setting around here in TN. I have to call salvage yards in Iowa getting parts for my 45. I'd say whatever a core value is for the engines would be fair. Yes they ran when parked but you don't know if everything is still good and nothing is cracked or not. Just my opinion. Good luck!

Not sure what there worth but I got a 404 diesel out of a 105 and put in dads 4020 years ago. It's a real easy switch.

thats kind of a rough question, worth of a 404 thats been sitting for 20+ years. I dont think i could justify more than 3 or 4 hundred. Pulling a motor from a 95/105 at my shop isnt to bad of a job, but away from home and not tear anything up in the process, thats tougher. Would it be worth it to spend 1/2 a day to try and get them running before making a deal or are you like me and just roll the dice and hope? haha If the farmer was gonna help ya get them out or loan you some equipment i would go higher. I know i could use a 404 for a 4010, but im not sure if its worth going that route or just overhauling the original. But if you end up with them and need a home for one of them you could make some money of of me lol

it really depends on where they were kept and how they were kept , if inside I would be less leery of it gassrer are less likely to stik than diesel . most diesel motors will stick up in 5 -10yrs time , unless they are fairly worn out,.and even those will stik . however they can be unstuck easy enuf by removing the injectors and riggin a plugin in a hydraulic hose from a tractor remote ,..like other posters say , I would not go much over core charge,, and if you can get values for that from your local dear dealer or machine shop you are good to make a offer. . but just think what you you should get ,starter, injectors and pump block and heads all have a hi dollar core charge,.alsoafter making the deal, you mite consider pulling your motor 1st , to learn all the shortcuts and pitfalls,,. and know how much effort you need to pound with the BFH to get it out of the motor compartment ,,. but wait..,, you are gonna put this motor in a 4020rite ? a friend of mine did that 20 yrs ago ,,. worx fine

Someone posted in general tractor forum abt value of two 404 engines he found in mid-Iowa. Lots of discussion and opinions--maybe same machines? Sorry I don't have the thread and know nothing abt these motors. I recall low end was offer 100/each up to 500 each. Guess you have to discount your time for such a project or get some enjoyment out of the whole process, which is often approach I take.
