IH 205 combine VS IH 315 Combine

These models were offered 1967-71 and both were twin grain tank style like the previous 203; the 205 was it's replacement but had a 6 cyl engine like the 315, which was 'a size bigger'. They shared the same throat width headers but these two were large enough to handle the #327 3 row cornhead. The 205 wasn't offered in Canada, although a few made it over the border. We owned a 315 for over 30 years and ran a #227 2 row cornhead and 13 ft grainhead. The twin grain tanks were a mixed blessing. It lowered the center of gravity making it stable on hilly land and increased holding capacity. The tanks emptied out well, kept clean preventing corrosion. The disadvantages were they hindered accessibility for maintenance and repair although the left side tank swung open like a door and alignment was important to latch it shut. You also had to operate a tank loader control because one tank usually filled full before the other. IH experimented with twin tank design on it's prototypes developing the 915 and axial flow combines.
