john deere 45 gas primer

When priming the John Deere 45 combine, should I expect any kind of resistance when pulling gas to the pump from the tank? The movement of the lever feels the same when moved in either direction. I guess the only way to determine if priming is the loosen line on backside of manual hand pump. Also, can I spray starting fluid into air breather to get combine started?
Thanks in advance.

If the engine has stopped so the fuel pump lever is on the "high point" of the cam the hand primer won't work. Turn the engine over part of a turn and try again... see if the lever "feels" any different.

I have nothing against using a LITTLE ether, however I have seen different opinions put into play as to how much a "little" ether is.

You can also tank an air compressor and pressurize the fuel tank and get fuel to the pump lot faster. At least that is what I did. I pumped and turned the motor over several times and never could get fuel up to the pump just using the primer lever on my 45.

I went around in circles with that on a Gleaner "E" and finally got it running off a Lawn mower tank above engine. First the gas was old and dirty, 2nd the pump diaphram was shot so hand/engine pumping didn't work and then the line went under stuff and was rotten rubber. After all that fixing and a 100 trips up-down and things ran fine it seemed like a good idea just to leave the small tank mounted with a "T"& valve and now a little priming gas helps start easy and gets it going good before pumping from the big tank. It will run long enough on the small tank to get to the shop or the gas barrel or at least out of the shed. cleddy
