John Deere 4400

Hey guys I'm looking at start up farming and have pretty much decided on a 4400 combine as I am somewhat familiar with them. (grew up around several different ones) I also have 5 4400s sitting around me that I have been told I can use parts off of as I need. I need to know the things to look for, unfortunately grandpa has long sense forgotten much that he knew about combines.. He could barely tell me what tractor he still owns that he bought almost new. I looked at a 74 model that had sat for 8 years and was gas but turned it down because couldn't get the money scraped together fast enough.

Also does anyone know of an 4400's for sale? I am in southern IN

Those that say to go buy a 6620 or 7720 don't waste your time I cant afford it. Also don't waste your time telling me to go out and hire someone to do it. That just doesn't happen here.

A friend ran several 00 series combines several years back, said a few parts were becoming NLA,
like the universal joint/assembly where the unloading auger connected when you swung it out.

If I were looking at one I'd look at the augers, elevator chains, bottom of the feederhouse,
sprockets, and just overall condition, as well as tires (expensive to replace.) Bear in mind I
wouldn't wish a 00 or 20 series JD combine on my worst enemy, but if you have access to used
parts and some experience with them, it might work for you---it's wise not to spend a bunch of
money on fancy equipment up front, but remember your planter and combine are the two most
important machines you will own and they need to work when you need them, and work well.
(Personally if I were you I wouldn't rule out an earlier model IH axial flow for simplicity and
reliability but that's just me.)

Don"t get the early one- make sure it has the rotary screen on the radiator...early ones tended to overheat.

I just bought a second 4400 last week they
are good machines. I have a buddy that has a
4420 look to unload reasonable. It is a good
machine but it is in thompson ohio

I'm interested. What's reasonable and any pictures? Details?

If you plan to harvest soybeans, you will need a machine that has header height control, which means you will have to stay away from the 4400
and go to the 4420

What part of southern Indiana? There is one sitting
at parks implement in Mitchell. I walked right past it
a few days ago but didn't really pay any attention
other than some one bought 2 #6 stickers like you
would put on a mailbox over the 4's. if it's too far
away I can give you the number. He doesn't have a
website or anything

There is nothing wrong with 4400's but I have a few thoughts for you. How high does the corn yeilds run in your area? 200 bu corn will be very slow going with a 4400 and a four row head. What are you planting with,4 row wide, narrow or 6 row narrow? If you are six row narrow a three row head would work very well and give you plenty of capacity. Do you have hills or level land? To run a three row narrow on the 4400 you need the wheels in the narrow position and that will not be very stable on hills. If you are planting with 4 row equipment take a look at a 6600 or 7700 as they can be had for very close to the same money and have more capacity. For years dad ran a 3300 and later a 4400. Tom

812-849-4003 I drove by it today and I believe it is
a 6600 or 7700 after looking at it. It looked like it has
a 4 row wide head on it and I think there is a grain
table there too.
