Corn Picker Question

I have a 323 New Idea 1 row picker and was wondering if there is a way to keep it from shelling off kernels off the corn ears. I had 6788 dekalb silage corn this year and it shelled it off bad, had another brand (no longer available) and it did good. I moved the rollers in and out, lowered the RPM's, adjusted my speed but nothing seemed to help. Does the rollers or husking bed shell it off the worst? I think I need to get a corn snapper, I can shuck by hand what little I pick. Does a snapper shell off any kernels like a picker?

I was also thinking about taking the chains off the husking bed and put a piece of plywood down so it will just slide to the elevator. This gets aggravating when i'm bagging and selling the nice whole ears. I was in a hurry this year to get it picked or I would have done it by hand.

When we picked a lot of corn with one of those we found that variety, and weather, made more difference than anything else. We never got much shelling at the husking rolls, but could get a lot at the snapping rolls. About 4 MPH was the speed that worked best. Any faster and it wouldn't take it.

Shelling at 18-19% moisture sure helps, but might not fit your goals of using the corn right away.

A JD picker shells a lot in the husking bed.

A NI picker shells a lot in the snapping rolls.

I believe in the Pensilvania area some pickers got modified with a JD style head and a NI style husker.

Getting the right variety of corn helps, but as mentioned most have moved to easy shelling types of corn and don't consider picking types any more.

Be glad you don't have an Oliver. We always pastured cows in the stalks and they did not need feed for a month.
