Chrysler 265 Industrial Engines In Combines-3490 MM

I recently ran a want ad on ytmag to buy a 265 Chrysler Industrial flat head 6 engine
and got little response...These were used in Super 92 Massey,430-431-535-545
Oliver,and 3490,3496,4290,4296 MM combines,etc..

I was wondering if anyone knows the whereabouts of one that has been taken
out of a combine as I'm looking for one...I'm still having nightmares about the
3490 MM combine I watched sell for $25 about 10 years ago near Reading,KS..
It had a freshly rebuilt 265 and it all went for scrap..

Don't help much, but there are about 5-6 MM combines of that style about 30 miles east of here in Minnesota along hiway 212.Been sitting for years, don't know what the guy is gonna do with them.

I don't know for sure on the models you cited, but I remember our Oliver 545 having a Chrysler 318 V-8, and not a flathead inline 6 cylinder. I remember a relative had a 525 with the inline 6, though.

Heres the engine options on 535 and 545 Olivers....I'm guessing that most
545's were sold with the V-8...I know of a 535 Oliver parts combine but
the owner won't sell the rebuilt 265 in it..

The 535-545 Oliver sales literature has one of the best cover shots ever..

Blaine,

I have one out of Massey Super 92. It was on propane it still has the propane set up on it. It's a cut out so it has the slide and the pulleys on the engine. I probably paid too much for it and hauled it a long way. It might be cheaper to buy another combine and pull it out. I want $400 bucks for it. I know I'm killing you but is a free motor and with being a propane engine it shouldn't need too much machine work on the rebuild. I will take pictures today and post tonight. Maybe you have something to trade for the engine. I'm located near Salina, Kansas.

An Oliver 525 was auctioned in November south of Eau Claire, Wis. Contact Jerry Andrews Auction. It may still be on the Dean Cox farm. It was rolled over but the engine was intact. If it is not there, it could be at Shaw's Wrecking Yard in Marshfield, Wis. Good Luck. I scrapper bought the combine and said it will be on the farm sight until last week. May still be there.

Shawn,I'm very interested in your 265 at $400..I really didn't want to buy a nice combine
and pull the motor..What are you looking to trade for? The 265's were all made 50 plus
years ago and the high price of scrap got lots of them 3-4 years ago..

I have (8) Chrysler powered combines and tractors so have been gathering up some 201's thru
250's just to have..Theres still some of them around.

In the picture with 2 engines, the closest is a 230 from a 82 Massey combine...I helped pull it
and it took over 2 hours to get it out..I got it unstuck in 30 minutes..Its going in a 101 Massey
tractor...The rear engine is a 250 from a water pump...Its been bored .060..

The other picture with a green head is a 242 Spitfire thats bored .040 and is free...
This is a big block thats 25" long..I have a 218 bought out of a 80 Special Massey but
it may not get pulled until warm weather next year..

The link shows how to identify Chrysler 6 cylinder IND engines..The IND 32,IND 33.and
the IND 265 is what I'm hunting..

Thanks but it will have a IND 251 in it...I know where a IND 251 from a MM
2890 combine is at that I can buy laying on the ground..

Yes,the rope tornado and that he's racing the coming storm to get the crop in..One of my
hobbies is taking pictures of storms..

The storm pictured was over 100 miles away and dropped 12" of rain in that area.

FYI for you the 265 in those Oliver combines are all engines made in Canada. The last year of the 535 used American built 265 engines. They are different! They even issued a separate parts book for those engines. My e-mail is open if you want more details. J.

Well Crap Blaine,

The motor I thought was a Industrial 265 is actually a Industrial 251. I guess I'm getting old and can't remember so well anymore. I have attached photo's of that engine. I had to do some digging to find the Industrial 265 which was bought the same way without being on propane. I have already tore that 265 engine down. I took a couple photo's of the name plate and block numbers. I believe was already at .30 over. I will have to find all the parts and make sure its complete. Sorry, did not have enough time to look. I'm positive it will all be there if you are still interested. It was free and stored when purchased. It's been in my shop for quite a few years.

Blaine,

These motors are both Canadian engines. The pistons and strokes are different from there American counterparts. When I said the motor was free it was not stuck not free. HaHa I paid the same for the both so probably would ask $350 for this engine. If you give me some time I will pull all the pieces and mic them so you know exactly you getting.

Shawn, thanks for the pics....You have all the time in the world because it would
be March before I would come out your way..Whats funny is that the Canadian
265 was only built 4 miles away from the US made one..All I can find out is that they
are all 3.4375 bore and 4.750 stroke??

Back in the early 1980's I remember going to a salvage yard north or northwest
of Lincoln,KS that had old combines and tractors..I remember pulling some parts
off a 1930's Case pull type combine engine for a friends CC Case tractor..I assume
that this place is long gone..

J,I can't seem to find much info on the Canadian built 265's..The Canadian
265's were built in Windsor,Ontario and the US built ones were built 4 miles
away in Detroit,MI...As far as I can tell they were all 3.4375 bore and 4.750
stroke?? I'll email you for more details..Thanks..

If you mean on the south side of the road about 20 miles west of Dawson-they are all gone. That place was cleaned up when scrap price was high. Must have had 6 plus combines there, mostly 2890s, there were larger ones too. I remember a green one too. a tractor or two plus parts machines in the grove, all gone. I think a younger generation took over, they still have cattle there. Weber was the name I think.

I had a Super 27 with the 265. Loved that engine. 3" straight pipe and lots of power. I think any of the later 27's had them.

The Super 27,90,and 92 Massey combines all came from the factory with a Chrysler
251 IND engine..They are a nice sounding engine..Its very possible that someone
could have blown up the 251 and put a 265 in a Super 27..

My 92 Massey Streamliner brochure # 124/358-125-1 shows the 251 as being the engine..
What is your sales brochure # ? Maybe the very last 92's had a 265?

Mine is 124/659-75-2. There is a 92 Streamliner about one mile from my house. Now I am going to have to look at it someday after it warms up.

1206 that 230 looks familiar. I had a 82 that was sent to Missouri after I traded it off. I had put a 230 out of a Dodge pickup in it to replace the worn out 265. I painted the 230 Chrysler blue before I put it in. The 230 wasnt enough engine for that combine. Did the 82 have a cab?

Just throwing this out, I had one lock up on an asphalt roller and the shop replaced it with a 225 slant 6. It looked like they just bolted it in.

My grandfather put a 265 in a Massey 101 Super back when I was a kid. My dad bought a new Oliver Super 88 that he thought was " all that". Grandpa got sick of hearing him brag, so he souped up his old Massey. The limit to that old Massey was traction. Nothing sounded as good as that old 265 with a straight pipe.

I am looking for one of these right now, do you still have this or does anyone reading this have one please? Appreciate any leads
