IH 1660 back together....

...and ready to go. Tightened the drive chain and the elevator chains to specs. Nothing hanging up now and no more noise. Got it all back together, panels on, most importantly....rock trap closed. If I never leave a rock trap open again in my life it will be too soon! Been a couple years, won't forget it anytime soon. So we had some wet snow last night and it is 40 degrees today. That last little bit of the field is hilly with a wet swale in the middle. I am waiting until the weekend to see if the cold nights tighten up the ground. I hate sliding down hills sideways with 100 bushels of corn up high behind me then trying to climb thru the mire at the bottom. Seems kind of hard on the hydro. A big thanks for the help! Next time I will know what it is when I hear it.

I am not going to BS you. Off the top of my head, I do not know. It is the 500th combine made in 1988, per the serial number. I use a lot of the basic functions, some of the more advanced features are still ahead of me as I learn. I should have scrapped the thing when the engine tanked in year one, but we fixed it. Year two I mostly stared at the oil pressure gauge. Year three I am still trying to get past the oil pressure issue but have started to play with more of the features. I tell ya, Ben. It has been like holding a tiger by the tail, but I am getting there. Why do you ask?

1660, like my 1640, have shaft monitors. When the shaft slows below operating speed, a buzzer will go off and the panel in front of you in the cab roof will light up telling you where the malfunction is.

Well, if it had the shaft monitors, they would have sounded as soon as the shaft started slowing down, before it plugs. Just thought that most combines of that vintage had some sort of monitoring system, perhaps it was optional. On my Gleaner, it has warned me to stop before I completely plugged the machine. Ben

I, too have a 1640 and it seems to have monitors on everything. It seems there are lights flashing and buzzers constantly. This fall the tailings elevator light was flashing and I couldn't find a thing wrong. I tried to ignore it. I later noticed that I had left the rear door open when I adjusted the lower sieve. I closed it and the buzzer and light stopped. I felt not real smart for a while.

Yes, I see. The machine definitely does have that and I have only really started to get into the monitoring systems. I know to some that may sound a little odd, but EVERYTHING about combines was new to me when I started and I have a lot of other issues to deal with in life. So I learned the basics and did the best I could. Anyone who thinks growing grain is simple has never tried to learn it all quickly. I will still be learning when the time comes to plant ME! LOL

I don't know if the monitor would have detected this. Currently I believe a loose chain caught on something and just stopped her dead. I never found a plug.

When I park mine for winter I leave elevator doors and rock trap door open. I then dangle a long piece of masking tape from steering wheel. When I get it out of shed next year I wonder what the hell is this piece of tape doing? Oh yes, doors. Also mine just barely fits in shop for maint. Unload auger sticks out back so can't get door shut. Have to turn auger to side. To be sure I don't back out with auger still out I wrap masking tape from steering wheel all the way around hydro lever and back. Never needed these reminders until I got old.

Pretty clever. Guess maybe I should do something like that. Not only did I leave the trap open but I left my biggest screw driver stuck in there and I lost that in the field. I was crossing the field with the 1586 a year later and looked down and there was the lost screwdriver...just waiting to go in one of my rear tires. I stopped and saved both. :)
