Caterpillar (Holt?) combine in N.D.

While traveling through North Dakota last month in an area that probably had a lot of vintage machines at one time, this old gal was the only one out in plain sight that I saw. For its' age it was in pretty nice shape being galvanized and looked complete.

What part of ND were you in?

I'm in north central ND, and there was a twin to it on our farm, never used there, but my late Uncle had hauled it home from somewhere, probably in the 50's.

Sadly, it got scrapped about 18 years ago when an unscrupulous scrapper cleaning up some other stuff on the farm cut it up after being told that area was off-limits to him.

That is really hard for me to believe, just too many folks looking for something like that. I,LL bet the owner knows what he has. Wish I knew where it was.

Bob,

That looks like a "straight cut" header of at least 30 feet. Seems that there would have been too many green weeds to run that in the time frame of this machine. My days on the farm (1940s and 50s) in ND was when swathing was common to "kill" and dry the weeds. Only straight cutting I remember was on flax grown on freshly broken sod so the weeds hadn't gotten a big start.

Go south of Mott on Hwy 8, east side of the road. Can't miss it. (Not very far from the So. D. line.) Too bad there are cold hearted scrappers that have no conscience what they are destroying. Much of it field ready.
