combine tire ply

I'm needing tires for my massey 510. I can get a Samson 6 ply R1 lug or an AMS (I think it was) 12 ply with R-4 lug. is 6 ply enough on a combine?

I will second the 12 ply. Today's corn hybrids (especially triple stacks) have stalks that are tough and they will go right thru today's tires. I bought a set for my Deere 105 of almost new Firestone 23.1X26's that are 16 ply. Tom

Front?

For overload purposes, minimum by the book would be an 8 ply 23.1x26.

I would use 12s for peace of mind. 12s usually aren't much more than 8s.

I had stalks punch through 6 ply steering tires several times.

Gary don't wait till next year to put them on. do it now so they have a chance to harden up over the winter. You will have far less stalk penetration problems with them if you do.

New tires are "gummy" stuff pokes through much easier. A set of year or two old tires is much tougher than ones fresh out of the mold.

If you are going used, that shouldn't be an issue.

That said, does it make financial sense to put half the value of a combine in a new set of tires?
