IH 1660 elevator issue

Resolved I think. The drive chain for the clean elevator was extremely loose. This is one of the issues the service manager at CIH told me might cause a problem. I really had no issues turning either elevator by hand. There was no material of consequence in the clean elevator and none at all in the other. Clean auger had about 50# of corn in it. Going to tighten the chain and put her all back together later in the week. Really don't see anything that would stop it running now. Sure makes a heck of a racket when that clutch slips!

This is the year of the slip clutch for me. Planter, drill, corn head all had issues with one. Not so here, but it did get involved.

On my 9500, (I know, not the same color) I was taught to tighten the chain till there is no slack, but so you can slide the link back and forth on the sprocket. Seems to work.

I was wondering if someone would ask that. It was high on my mind also. Maybe someone will say different, but I looked the whole business over and the chain was on all the sprockets and hanging a little loose. I don't think that would make the clutch slip. I think that elevator got hung on something in the chute. I feel the need to look inside that chute. There's the real reason I did not put it all back together this afternoon...not satisfied.

As others have said, it sounds like a loose elevator chain. I'm not talking about the drive chain, talking about the paddle chain.

To check their tension you can't always do it the way the book says.... ( pulling chain away from bottom sproket to check gap ). That method will work if the chain and sprokets are about half worn out, but if you try it on a new chain and sproket-not so good. You need to reach up above the bottom sproket to get a good feel of how tight the chain actually is.

You need to check both the clean grain and tailings paddle chains because they both use the same slip clutch.

That happened to me on my Gleaner K. It was just so loose, that it either hung up on something n the shoot or link hung up on sprocket.
tightened up and no problems since

I have seen that happen. Especially if the sprocket is worn sufficient to put a bit of a hook on a few teeth. OK...I going to look up inside as best I can and check the paddle chain, then tighten the drive chain and hit it. That is, I when the mud lets me on the field again. Frustrating to be so caught up on things and not able to finish. Between the elevator telling me they won't take it and the weather...

I feel the need for a small bin to help me with those problem days at the elevator.

I talked to my gut at CIH and looked at the official (10" thick cover to cover) service manual. This weekend I will get up in the bin and tighten the chain on the paddles a bit. Will have a look at the other also. I think this is going to be all it takes. A bit of a relief actually. :)

Yes, clutch was slipping. Currently I believe the paddle chain inside the clean elevator was jamming due to being loose. Need to go out and check that but working until Sunday now.
