IH 1660 jammed elevator

So it would appear that the noise in the rear is from the clutch for the elevators. The tailings elevator chatters in unison with the clutch and clean corn elevator does not move at all. One is jammed. So I see where there is an idler gear to release the chain. What is the best way to try to move these by hand to clear them? Is there a place to put a wrench?

If you can get a pipe wrench on the shaft somewhere, turn it backwards, and it should release the object jammed. Ben

I have plugged the elevator on my 1660 a couple of times. I open the door, and it will then run with machine power to clean out. One thing I really dislike about this combine is no way to monitor what the return elevator is doing.

I will have to look for a shaft on one of the sprockets maybe. I'm not sure what is up there. Maybe one of the paddles broke off. Ran out of time today. I might be able to look at it tomorrow afternoon or Friday. Busy week.

Can't get on the field now anyway. Too much mud.

What Bob said. Just open the bottom door on the clean grain elevator, run it out on the ground, shovel it back into head and then slow down. That is the bottle neck on those machines. It tells me you must have really good yield.

I wish it were true. I have been running close to 30 bushel corn this year due to severe drought after planting...long story. The field I am doing now does have a better population but not enough I think to plug her up. I opened both elevators before I came home and they are still stuck. I think there must be something more wrong in there.

How wet is the corn? Didn't this happen yesterday? No matter what the problem if this corn is high moisture you need to get it out of that elevator NOW or your problems are just starting.

The corn is just over 16% and it is pretty cold. Today was warmer but the nights are cold and it stays that way inside the shed. I am familiar with what you are saying. I had a major breakdown on the field two years ago and a lot of corn rotted in places where it should not have. A real mess. But, really, I do not think there is much if any corn in the elevators. I opened them up. The clean corn auger dumped about half a bushel. Much less in the other. I was not actively combining when the noise started. I had cleared a row, pulled up to the woods, backed up, and was pulled forward about to enter the next row when the noise began. The elevators had more than half a minute to clear. On top of that the ends of my rows by the woods are almost barren due to deer. Seriously...you need to take my word for it. Not likely there is much material in there. More likely one of the rubber paddles came off and jammed it up. I will let you know either way when I get them moving again. Nothing would make me happier than to find the tailings elevator jammed with...well...tailings.

I would venture to say that your elevator chain came off of the sprocket or broke. They are driven from on top.Take the drive chain off and see if you can turn backwards. Should be a inspection plate that you can take off to.

OK, now we are making some headway. If that machine was running empty for 30 seconds and still half bushel in clean elevator then that's where problem is. Should have been completely empty by then. Turn machine backward until problem falls out bottom. Good luck. I'm off to watch some Judge Judy.
