JD 45 plugging up, feels underpowered.

I have a JD45 with the 145 gas engine. I'm harvesting beans, the beans are tall and good. I also have a problem with a lot of water hemp. Earlier in the harvest the cylinder would jam up. Now it seems like the feeder house is plugging up constantly, literally every 15-20 feet. I have the machine in first gear, with the selective speed drive in the slowest setting. Because I'm driving so slow the reel is beating the beans out before they are even cut. The reel is also set to it's slowest RPM. I'm also only taking two rows of beans at a time to avoid jamming the machine up. Any ideas on how to fix my problems? I know this is a small machine, but it should do better than this.

If there is a slip clutch on the feeder house you may have to tighten it up. After slipping several times it probably needs to be re-adjusted. I had one the shaft slid thru the sealed bearings and the ends of the bars would hit on the side of the feeder house and set off the clutch.

I had an old IH 303 do this. This machine had the old time platform with the feeder house attached. At the combine end of the feeder house there was a hinged flat plate which slipped into the cylinder area by about 6". One time installing the head that plate got bumped and would not pivot on the hinge. It would not feed for anything and fact brought the beans back out to the platform. Took a while to figure out. Don't know if the older JD's had the same setup but if so, maybe worth checking out.

The Deeres do have that plate. I too think the slip clutch might have loosened up or worn out. Sometimes when a slip clutch rattles the castle nut on the end of the shaft will shear the cotter pin and back off. When you are running tough tall beans with weeds through a 45 you have a big job on your hands. I cut my teeth on a 45. Anytime a big weed went in I would stop and pray. Then I got a 105. The first time I ran some big weeds through the 105 I instinctively did the normal stop and pray. The weeds went through without fazing the combine a bit. What a difference!
