Nephew has a 1660 with the cummins 8.3 engine with 3300 hr.He he know the stories about the putting a rod threw the block.Would this be about time to do an rebuild. The rest of the machine is in very good condition. He got an oil report that wasn't best or worst .should he do an rebuild at this time or not.

The idiot engineers have that engine running way too fast. They want it @ 2750 no load RPM!

Mine threw a rod without any warning a few years back. I got lucky and found a truck engine close by, and the experienced shop guy who owned it helped me get it going. We switched the complete fuel system, which had to include the front gear housing, pan, manifold, etc. from my engine. He discovered my engine was not original!

My monitor will beep if engine speed drops below 2450. Monitor is not adjustable. I have my engine running about 2500 under normal load, which is only about 2550 not loaded. Only very occasionally will the monitor beep. It will when I get in mud, but I know what's going on. After plugging the rotor when I first got it, I watch the power(manifold pressure) monitor closely! I only run wide open under load. I throttle back coming down hill, etc.

The last 1660's were re geared to run at a much more sustainable 2200, I think.

I don't know how one would predict when it will let go.

Thanks for the input.I think now he is planning on pulling it this winter and having it rebuilt for the amount he uses it it should last till he retires from farming.

What is it with those engines getting so few hours? With heavy construction equipment (excavators, wheel loaders) getting 10,000 to 12,000 hours under heavy use but combines seem to get about 1/3 of that.
