IH 1480 rotor speed adjustment

We tried changing the rotor speed with the switch but the speed won't change. Watching the motor for it, it barely moves but if you take the chain off, the motor turns freely with the switch. Could the motor possibly just be weak? The guy we bought it off of only did beans the past 9 years so I'm sure he never really changed the rotor speed.
We tore it all apart yesterday & you can turn the gear by hand easily so it's not froze up but it won't turn with the switch when it's put back together.
Anybody ever have this problem before or have any suggestions?

When you say you can turn the gear by hand, I assume you are talking about the chain driven sprocket? How much did/can you turn it? How much did you tear apart? Sheaves have to slide freely for all that mechanism to work. Belt tension has an effect on, and is effected by the moving sheaves also.
I have thought that the rotor and fan speed change on my 1660 hesitated, but it's hard to tell from the cab. I try to remember to cycle them full travel occasionally, and then leave them all the way slow, to relieve tension on everything.

That has my mind working. I had a similar issue on the 1660 but I think it ended up just being a bad connection. I could see it arc when the combine was in the shed. I think this was like three years back...a LONG three years. Not sure you need to tear it all apart. 90% of these things on combines have the simplest solutions. One person operating the switch several times in both directions while someone mechanical watches and all this after a good cleaning and lubrication. Usually finds the issue. Rule out what it is NOT and what it is should become apparent.

Every time I've had problems like that it's turned out to be the plug. Cut it off and crimp a couple of spade terminals
on and give it a try.

Thank you all for the advice. When we started combining the rotor speed was around 600. We got the speed down to 280 by turning the gear by hand when we had it apart but can't get it to go back up any with the switch now that it's back together. The motor turns very little then stops like it doesn't have enough power.

Cut the plug off. I've had the same problem you describe with both rotor and fan speed on two combines and it's
usually that plastic plug. The switches fail as well but less common.

(quoted from post at 23:21:34 11/15/16) Do you have the rotor engaged while trying to get the rpm's back up? It should be.

Yeah we had the combine running & rotor engaged while trying to change the speed with the switch. The motor moves a tiny bit then just stops.
