Gleaner Auto Header Height

We have a 1998 Gleaner R52 with a 800 series flex header. The auto header height has always worked great on this combine until lately. It is very jerky going down, and when it reaches the down position it bounces up and down. It goes up about 6 inches then falls down. I had the accumulator recharged, didn't help, then we cleaned the sensors on the ends of the header and the problem seemed to clear up. Cleaning the sensors seemed to solve the problem, but I guess I am wondering why dirty sensors would make it jerk while lowering through mid air.

I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem and what cause and solution you came up with? Ours is fixed for the moment, and hope it stays fixed.

Mine is a 300 series, somehow the bell crank would rotate out of position on the sensor pivot rod and do the same thing. This would then tend to distort the spring switch, making the problem worse. If the field was smooth enough, I just let the knife flex and run the header manually....works OK in tall beans, not so much in short ones. Ben
