Wondering how to gauge weather our rolls are too "experienced" as it seems the majority of the stalks get very close to the top of the deck plates before the ear gets snapped off.

I was told years ago if you can see the ground through the rolls where the 2 bolts clamp them to the shaft, they're shot

There is a thin bead of hard surfacing on the edge of the flute. If it's gone they're shot.

Some years ago, we had a professional welder come to our farm and took the time to build up the rolls with a welder. I cannot recall if it was a wire feed or stick welder. It certainly was an improvement over the worn rolls, but I don't remember how long this lasted.
