How available are parts for the IH 1420 series combines? I am looking at one, and I need it to farm 160 acres.

Should I be going with the 1600 series instead? If I buy the 1420, I would probably be keeping it for the next 10 years.

If you are worried about parts you don't have to up to a 1600 series. Just go up to a 1440/60. 1420s use parts not shared with the bigger more common models.

When I was looking for a combine about 6 years ago, I also looked at a 1420. But I was told on this forum to stay away from the 1420 because they had weak front axels and lack of parts, both new and used. So I ended up buying a JD 4420 for the 35 to 40 acres of wheat and oats I combine. Al

1420 or 1620 makes no difference. The trouble is neither one shares many parts with the larger 1440/60 or 1640/60 machines. The front axles and final drives are weak. If you run a six row header you will need to be careful. You can easily brake the final drives.

I'd look for a 1440 or 1460, you can buy them for the same money. There are a lot of aftermarket parts available and dealers still support the machine.

So few 20's (14 or 16) were built they don't have the support the bigger machines have.

I almost bought one last year but I'm glad I didn't get it. I was picking up some parts for my Gleaner last night at a combine wrecking yard and mention the 1420 to him. He said be happy you didn't get it. He cant get parts for them either.
