Gleaner E light in back

Were the "E" s known for being light in the back? I got my Dad's old Gleaner "E" running again after the last use in about 1993. We sold it on an auction in 2001 but the scrapper left it behind after paying almost nothing. I have had it running a few time since then but about 3 years ago I was just ready to travel about 10 miles to another place when it quit and the weather was cold so I pulled it. Fresh gas-Gravity fed & clean points and it started right up.

I can drive it forward pretty good as long as I don't get close to anything but backing up puts it right up in back and on its nose. Some of the trouble may be the heavy flexible Love sickle bar and the addition of a heavy hydraulic to control the reel up& down on the 13" header.
The brakes aren't very good so using them is questionable. I do remember Dad bringing it right around at the end of the roll when he needed to.

Maybe I should spell check. I meant row and not roll. Please excuse anything else that is wrong.

They are a bit light, depending on which header is on. Put some fat steering tires on, fill with fluid. Hang weights on the steering axle. First time I set the F on its nose was a pucker experience. 438 head, coming "down" out of a cousin"s field.

That's hard to believe. We had 10' heads on our E's, which was enough in heavy wheat. Two row corn head was much heavier, but still not a problem. Then when I put a 330 head on one, it lightened the back. But I still ran it without counter weights.

The only time my K gets light in the back is if I have the hopper full and I start to back up a incline, the 238 head on the front is pretty heavy but empty I've never had it raise up.

Do you have a straw chopper on it? That balances them nice.

Typically the corn head makes them light, not a bean head.

We bolted 2 U hooks on back and hung some old tractor snow chains across the back, made a lot of difference. Doesn't take much weight way back to balance it up.

I spent many an hour running Dads 1966 E Gleaner....It had a 13 ft grain head (no floating bar) and a 2 row corn head...I don't remember the back wheels ever being off the ground..
