820 head vs 1660 combine

Can anyone tell me will the automatic header height control on an 820 head be compatible with same on the 1660 combine. Manuals are indicating the 820 was made for the 1400 series combines. I am waiting on a manual for the 820. At this point I don't know how the HHC works for this head. For that matter, I have never used HHC on any head! :)

I can't answer your question. I assume from what you said you have possession of the head? Does it have an electrical plug compatible with the combine?

I have a 1020 head which came with my 1660. I had not used the HHC until this year. I had to free up the little cable which comes from underneath the header mechanism, up around to the switch. There is a nice diagram in the 1020 manual showing the proper orientation/adjustment of all those pieces.

Have you had the header hanging on the combine so you can be sure all the mechanism is free?

I'm not doubting you. Lord knows you have been a great help to me on this machine! Just asking because I am a safety nut. I have been worried almost constantly about hydraulic failure when working on heads so I put the lockout on and then as much cribbing as I can find so that I might survive if the thing doesn't crack my skull coming down a foot or two. BUT, how in the world does it come OFF the combine? Incredibly heavy, hanging at a back downward angle behind a heavy metal flange with the weight laying against the feeder house and the bottom latches are also engaged. Can the head actually fall off the combine somehow??? Explain it to me so I can be safe. What fails that this can happen?

Never mind!!!!! I reread your post. You sad "FALL" not "FALL OFF". See how friggin paranoid this makes me. I HATE WORKING UNDER COMBINE HEADS!!!

Bob, I answered my own question but I appreciate your comments. The 820 header height control (HHC) is not compatible with the 1660 header height control. There is no place to hook the manual cable device on the head to the combine. There is no place to hook the electric plug on the combine to the head. CIH tells me I can look into conversion. I would have to evaluate the condition of this head first though. If the conversion is expensive and the head has other issues then an upgrade to a better head would be the way to go. I am gradually getting rid of everything that needs a lot of time consuming repairs with expensive parts. I'll see how it picks my beans first, then decide.
