1440 vs 915 and 715

Guys I need some help. I have a decent old 915 and 715 that I have been running in beans and corn every year. I'm located in cental ohio so I have a little roll to the fields but not much. The old 15 seris is getting harder and harder to find parts and they are nickel and diming me to death. What are your thoughts on a 1440?? good and bad I want both. I have a good 17.5 ft 820 head that I could put on it and I would look for a 6 row head since my corn planter is 6 row. There is a super clean 1440 that came up for sale in the neighborhood and it may be time to switch

I am more of a "green" machine guy, but I do have a high degree of respect for the Axial Flow combines. I have a friend of mine who had a 1460, which I believe shares the same internal dimensions as the 1440, with the key difference being a lesser horsepower engine. I have heard some suggest the 1440 had lighter axles and final drives, but you would need check that out. As my good friend told me, who struggled some in soybeans with his 1460, particularly green stems, starting too early and quitting too late. I was around him one time when he started earlier than he typically did in the morning and slugged the rotor. I saw what that was about and I never wanted to be around that again. He put the specialty rotor in it, which as I understand prevents that "roping" of the material in the rotor cage ultimately causing the slugging. He continue to run Case IH combines. I remember him telling me how that specialty rotor truly made that an excellent machine in soybeans. Corn was never a problem for him. I ran the machine for him only in corn and it was a very nice machine to operate. See what other comments come your way on the topic from other people who can offer more info than I can. With respect to the one comment......................I am unfamiliar with the parts availability situation. It might not be so bad, since the 1440 was replaced by the 1640, then 1644, 2144, and finally the 2344, which I believe was the last/end of that model's lineage. Looking at the 2344 on a used machinery website, the latest model year I saw was 2001.

Good little machine just look over the wear parts closely. As for parts well.. you can almost build a 1440 from after market parts catalogs minus the super strcture.

I have had a 1440 for several years. It is a good combine smooth and quiet. I bought a 1640 last year and my 1440 is for sale. The 1640 has a specialty rotor and does better if you have some weeds. I think any of the axial flows are way ahead of the older combines. I have a corn head that was originally on a 715 and it fits fine. The fellow that said the 1440 may be as old as the 715, I think they quit making the 15's before they made the 1440. The 1440 does a good job and is easy to work on. I can't think of any negatives.

While the 1440 and 1460 are the same size machines the 1460 has a turbo 436 motor while the 1440 doesn't have the turbo. The grain tank on the 1440 doesn't have extensions so it holds a bit less. Biggest difference is the transmission and final drives. It's my understanding the 1440 has the same finals and transmission as the 715 while the 1460 shares these components with the 1480.

Parts availability, even through CNH is good - it's rare to find parts NLA. And if all else fails the aftermarket and wreckers usually have what a guy needs. Like the 20-series John Deeres the early IH rotaries are popular and plentiful.

715 was made later than 815-915. Was discontinued when the 1420 came out. 715 was made till 79, somebody will know more, I have a 77 815, was told this was the last year for them.

There are enough aftermarket parts to replace almost any wear items on the 14XX series combines, not to mention CIH has most things still in stock.

To the original poster.....As long as the machine is in good shape, go for it, you'll think you have died and went to heaven.
