Setting up Gleaner F3 for corn

Put in the filler bars, set cylinder to 3/4 inch, 500 rpm, concave bars, 1, 3 and 5 for starters, chaffer 3/4, seive 3/8 inch, perforated elevator bottoms, may need a cob sheild at the end of the raddle. Get a manual, many good pointers in it.Good machine in corn, remember to hook up the variable speed header line if so equipped. BEN

thanks for the info Ben, it was nice meeting you and chatting today.

One more question, how fast do I run the variable speed on the header?

That depends on the crop, which in turn determines your ground speed. The gathering chain tip speed must be a bit faster than the ground speed, if cobs are bouncing off the windshield, it's too fast. A bit of experience and you will find that spot where the cobs flow in nicely and do not bunch in front of the auger. In lighter ares of the field, as you increase the ground speed, you also increase the header speed. Play with it a bit and you will soon get the hang of it. Take care, Ben

If I remember right, you were looking at both an F2 and F3 earlier this year. What factors influenced your decision to go with the F3? just wondering

there were a few factors that made me go with the f3. The f2 was an early serial number with the short shoe, gear drive, no corn head, and the older style bean head which needed work.

The f3 has the 313 flexhead, 4x30 corn head, hydro drive, auto header height. I have used it to take 55 acres of wheat and 45 acres of beans off so far and I'm happy with my decision so far. I have replaced 2 small belts, one chain, and a couple chain tensioners, but have had no down time during harvest so far.

Sounds good. I had a later F2 for years. It, like my earlier Gleaners, was a money maker. By that I mean, for what it cost, it did a lot of work. I wanted something a little bigger, that would reach over a truck better, and with hydro drive. Unfortunately the Gleaner dealers are gone. So now I have a red combine.

only things I would add is to remember to pull knives out of chopper if you plan to run chopper. I never ran filler bars and was pleased without them. Centash has it right.
