retracting hyd cylinders

How do you retract your combine hyd head cylinders? In the past I would drop cylinder in dirt and go forward until the ram was at desired position. There has to be a better way to retract the one-way hyd cylinder.

My first combine was a square back 45 without a cab. Did enough custom work the first fall to pay for it. I was just out of school. It had a 235 corn head. Can still pic my Dad shelling in the same field as me with his 3300 with a cab on a real cold windy day. Everytime he got where I could see him he would wipe his face like he was sweating while I thought I would freeze to death with every coat I owned on.LOL Tom

Ditto on what Tom says.Own a rb55 and sb95. Used to own a sb45. A 'shame' to loose the oil,but it's only a cup or so.

Tom,my first combine was a roundback 55 without a cab.Later added a cab.Big improvement.Sold it. later bought it back....twice!The last time,it was gone for 17 years.Should have let it go to the scrapper.

Took your advice. Less than hour I'm ready to roll. Lesson learned on changing heads: don't mess with hyd cylinders once pulled off head and remove bean head drive pulley when removing or reattaching head. Don't have to worry about running into it and probably would make removal of head easier.

The next year we added a cab to mine as well. But we lost it in a barn fire in 1994. Lightning hit the barn and burnt it to the ground. The next year got another 45 that was not as good and in 2005 bought my first 95 with a 435 corn head and 13 ft platform. In 2007 I bought a 55 and another 95 off Ebay and three years ago got my 105 and parted out the 55. I used to "pop" the lines and bleed off the oil when hooking up,, now I just pull up to my heads and hook up the cylinder then hold the header lift lever in the down or lower position then ease ahead,, this is on my Case machines with no quick attach heads,, saves me losing oil but both work fine for me
