F-2 Header won't come up

The header works fine sometime, but sometimes when I pull up to raise it, it just moves an inch and stops. I pull up again, and another inch.. then after a while it works fine again? There is plenty of hydraulic oil. No obvious leaks..... Ideas?

Can you get help to watch the spool valves while the control in the cab is operated to make sure the spool is getting its full travel? Believe it or not, sometimes the exposed part of those spools can corrode a little, and that binds them up. Also, any other spool sticking even just a tiny bit off center can mess up the whole operation.

Thanks! This is my 'trainer' combine, so there is steep learning curve. Since she has seen a lot of acres sometimes it is difficult to tell how much is just 'worn out' and how much is 'out of adjustment'.....

I'm assuming the hydraulic pump is belt-driven?

If so, check that the belt is snugged up and the belt and/or sheaves are not worn enough to allow the belt to slip under load.

What describe can be typical of such a situation. The hydraulics lift a bit, the belt slips, and the load check keeps the head from creeping down while you're holding the lever.

Same thing happened to my f2 when i bought it. It had sat for a few years and after using it for a few acres the belt started slipping as it was dry from setting you would bump lever it would raise a inch or two new belt took care of problem

Thank you everyone! I have a whole list of small things to fix on her over the winter (and a couple of big ones as well). As I look over the list, I am wondering weather to get another one now that I know what to look for, or invest a couple of thousand in this one.....

The crop is in the bin and now the F-2 goes in the shop. I now know what is worn (out) and what I need to fix to combine beans next year.... the question is whether to fix or find another one (in better condition) Mine has an ample amount of duct tape, the electric header clutch is out and she needs new cylinder bars (for starters).

All in all, for the first time in the field in several years, it performed very well. I now know better how to set it and what to look for. It has been a good learning experience.

Thanks for your help and assistance!
