john deere 55 combine

My son wants to do a little small time farming. Mostly corn and soy beans. We found this old 55 combine that has both a corn and a grain head. We want something that is small and easy to move down the road from field to field. Maybe even make a little trailer to haul it behind a truck. The owner of this 55 says it just needs a battery and an electric fuel pump. He says it has quick attach heads. Is that possible? I havnt looked at it in person yet but here are a few pictures. He wants 1500 for it.

Anyone on this page will tell you that I am not a John Deere man. But you can't go wrong with a 55 John Deere. If it goes to the field in the morning and cuts, it will be cutting all day long. Tough and durable & simple to work on. If it fires and runs it is worth the asking price.

The owner also stated he had an adjustable corn planter and he narrowed it up to 32" and he could harvest it with this head. Is that possible. He said its actually a 36" head. We have a planter now that is set up for 34" rows so it if that's the case, it should work.

I'm with DeltaRed. If that combine was in my neighborhood, you wouldn't have had to time to take and post pictures because by now I would have snapped it up for that price. Looks like a late 55 but not a corn special. What engine does it have?

You will like it. They are a simple design and easy to maintain. I parted out my 55 two years ago because of water in the oil and it was just wore out. I still have two 95's and a 105. Cut 25 acres of soybeans today with the 95 diesel. That 55 will like its gas,my 95 used two gal of diesel per acre and the 55 gas used twice that. If you decide to go to 30 inch rows and a three row head you are going to want a bigger machine if you have high yeilds. Tom

nice combine and aren't many around anymore . looks good and I too, would have bought it up for that price. we had a 45 years ago, good little machines , you can't go wrong here. let us know and more pictures if you could.

The owner of this combine is on vacation so I cant buy it until he gets back. I havnt even seen it in person yet. He just had these pictures on his phone and he sent them to my phone. He told me he used it to harvest corn 2 years ago. He has now sold his farm and is selling everything. He did say that he drained the water out of the motor so I wonder if it leaks water into the oil. How bad would this machine be to cut soybeans. Would it have a flex head? I havnt seen any pictures of the grain head yet.

Crack the oil drain plug and back out slowly to check for water in the pan.On combine engines with a long oil drain hose it seems you always get a small amount
of condensation in that hose.

Well by the picture I can see it has a quick tach feeder house and will use the newer JD heads on it, In fact it has a 244 quick tach corn head on it. He more than likely has a 13' 100 series head (or quick tach head) on it, It could be a strait head or one with a flouting cutter bar on it and it may have the spring assist under the header to help the head flout. The 55 is a good machine and easy to work on and run and a set of books will explain a lot if you get it. Good luck, I hope you get it. Bandit
