In the last 100 hrs. of operation I have ruined 3 cylinder
variable speed belts. The first 2 were destroyed with no apparent
reason. There were no signs of slippage and no signs of heat. The
second was a heavy duty belt and the first was a regular. Tonight
the machine started to vibrate and I found the belt has chunks out
on the sides in 3 different places. Same scenario. No apparent
reason. This one is a regular belt.
Everything seems to be inline. I checked all concerned bearings
and no heat found. There are no heat marks like there was
slippage. We are running good beans and the machine is not
laboring.
I am stumped. Any ideas?

Check the bushing inside the variable pulley sheave. They get worn on the half that moves. It allows the pulley to cock and then it will pinch the sides of the belt. Over a short time this will end pulling chunks out of the belt.

I had the same issues with my 105 last year. We messed around and finally replaced the two bushings in the center disc and now it works great with no more belt slipping. Tom
