JD 9500 cracking beans.

Last year the 9500 split beans. Like half of the beans in every tank. 750 acres worth. I varied everything and tried all adjustments. I think it is something worn.

The return auger and elevator are good and adjusted. The clean grain paddles/elevator are brand new and clean cross auger underneath looks like new still. I think I had it replaced some years back. The grain tank auger flighting was worn beyond belief. I replaced both sections with Shoup parts last week. I'm hoping that does it this year. The auger tube in the bin had worn through in a spot to I put on a poly repair.

Is there anything else that would split them? The header is in top shape and the feeder house chain is adjusted to spec.

Ray Stueckle always wrote cylinder speed and concave fillers. Don't always work for me and I think you are wise enough to try everything. To dry? Our beans are just starting to turn down here. Tom

Sounds to me like you are running them through several times

How do you have it set? You should be able to do a very nice job of threshing. Let us know and we can help you. Also, what is the moisture content of the beans? Mike

How flat/straight are your cylinder bars and concave??? I have seen worn bars and concaves split beans. You have to have them set close in the middle to thrash which makes the sides too close and they spit/damage the grain.

Haven't started beans yet this year. If it's cracking this year I am going to call a YT emergency meeting! It's so odd because it's never cracked beans but last year it did quite a few. I cut milo right before and had trouble with the bin auger spitting milo over the cab. That's when I realized how bad the flighting was on the bin loading auger. The top half (extension) had flighting half worn away and causing it to throw grain funny.

This is why I blamed the cracked beans on that auger. When I took the old auger sections out I had to wear gloves because the edges were like serrated knives. I guess that's what 3300 hours will do!

Setting it "just so" hasn't been a problem in the past but I guess as she ages it could happen. I crawled all over her all day today getting her ready and checking and adjusting everything. I'm not sure I've seen another combine that's had such TLC. It's been on this farm since it was a year old so I know nothing has been run through it that could mess up the internals. That's why I'm hoping that replacing the two augers into the grain tank are the cure. I'm not sure where to go after that.

Oh, someone mentioned cylinder bars and concave setting. It has new (maybe 250 hours) bars and we varied concave settings to try to pinpoint the cracked beans. Nothing. I guess it could be the conditions. I need to look back and see what the moisture was. I remember they weren't overly dry but I binned 5000 bushels and only ran the fans for a few days to satisfy myself so they must have been middle of the road.

3300 hours I would really look at the rasp bars on the cylinder first. Just chase it through the machine and see what you can find.

I agree. Need good bars for beans but corn works better with worn or even flat bars. The old 7720 had the hard surfaced built up bars and it will run thru beans better than 9510,but it cracks the heck out of wet corn.

Sharp grain tank auger flighting will crack beans. You do not need or want to fill tank plumb full before dumping. Doing food beans try to never have beans above the auger.

I am putting my guess in for rasp bars too. :D

Those hours shouldn't be enough to wear out a set of cylinder bars. I would say you are on the right track suspecting the fill auger. This is the most important auger on the whole combine. If it isn't right it will affect every other operating system on the combine. I would imagine being it was worn that you had beans getting carried over the clean grain elevator and making multiple trips up and back down. That is a recipe for lots of damage. If the problem persists do a kill stop on the combine and find out where the damage starts inside the combine. Mike
