started up today to shell corn , under load , would not hold rpm,s and just smoke , tons of black smoke. did the turbo quit or did it the governor in the injection pump? the turbo turns , took intake hose off. how do you tell if it is a bad turbo? also changed air and fuel filters , nothing changed. runs ok till you move or engauge separator. it is the 4 cylinder diesel of course

went thru that hale 2 yrs ago on my perkins in a mf 750 ,.. ended up the turbo was bad , and the injection pump too ,..the turbo imho should spin easily ,.. you can call my guy that fixes my stuff ,. at INTERSTATE INJECTION , Seymour Ind , Jeff Is Durn good and reasonable too ..

Check the entire air intake system for blockages. To diagnose remove the air hose form the suction side of the Turbo. Run it and see if the engine responds normally. IF it run normally then you have something in the air intake system. IF it does not run correctly then either turbo or injection pump issues.

I had a JD 7700 that sucked a hand full of small twigs down the intake stack. They got stuck in a 90 degree elbow between the Air intake stack and air filter. The combine would smoke and have little power with the filter cover on. Remove the filter cover and the combine would run fine. Took me all one afternoon to figure out what was going on.

I would still bet on blocked/restricted air intake.

I know you said you changed the fuel filter, but did you clean the screen in the sediment bowl? Your symptoms sound like fuel starvation. A little algae from sitting all year is all it takes to plug the sceen

I had an L gleaner with the 301 diesel. It lost power and about blocked out the sun with smoke. The problem ended up being a large pipe plug in the intake manifold had come loose and fell out. Replaced plug and everything was normal. Don't know how the 4cyls are, but might be something to check. The plug that fell out was under the bottom of the manifold.

We lost multiple days one harvest with an obstruction like that in our Massey super 92. The mechanic came out and happened to be standing in just the right spot when I throttled it up. The engine sucked the radiator hose piece that joined the air cleaner pipe completely flat. Lucky he saw it. Only wish it would have happened before we bought a new carb and governor.

I had that problem a few years ago combining for a neighbor in the spring. Someone said the co-op had blended in some biodiesel. Don't know if that true or not. Had to clean the sediment bowl screen about every hopper full. But if the problem is fuel starvation, would there be lots of smoke? I don't recall mine smoking when it ran out of power. There were 2 combines running and the other operator never said anything about excess smoke. Lots of good leads on what to else to check posted here.
